Glaucoma Evaluation and Treatment

Glaucoma is frequently known as the silent thief of sight as it generally has no symptoms until advanced and irreversible vision loss has occurred.  Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve and most patients with glaucoma experience slow progressive loss of their peripheral vision.  Patients often only become aware of the losses at late stages when central vision is affected.

Glaucoma is one of the most common causes of irreversible vision loss, but there are many effective treatments to preserve vision and it has a good prognosis with early detection and appropriate treatment.

At Alameda Eye Physicians, our comprehensive eye examinations include dilation with detailed inspection of the optic nerve to determine if a patient has glaucoma. We have extensive experience in detecting early signs of glaucoma and order appropriate diagnostic tests to confirm and monitor glaucoma.

We employ all the latest diagnostic tests in glaucoma management including pachymetry, Humphrey Visual Field analyzer, and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) of the anterior and posterior segment.

The mainstay of open-angle glaucoma is medical therapy by topical eye drops.  Our doctors will discuss with you the optimal choice of medications to manage your glaucoma.

When alternative therapies beyond topical eye drops are necessary, we provide a comprehensive laser and surgical glaucoma services that best suit your disease state.
