Comprehensive Eye Examinations

A comprehensive eye examination is recommended at least every 2 years for patients under 55 according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.  Patients over the age of 55 are recommended to have yearly exams.

A comprehensive exam starts with a complete history of your overall health, ocular history, and family medical history.  After your history is established one of our qualified ophthalmic assistants will begin the vision portion of your exam.  They will take measurements of your cornea, verify your current glasses prescription as well as perform the initial refraction portion of your exam to determine your best corrected vision with glasses or contact lenses.

The next step will be to check your muscle balance, pupil size, visual field, and intraocular pressure.  Intraocular pressure is extremely important since it is a factor in determining whether or not a patient has glaucoma.  Finally the pupils of your eyes will be dilated to allow the physician a clear view of the macular and retinal areas where most eye diseases are present.

Some eye diseases are unnoticeable to patients at first and by the time they realize something is wrong it can sometimes be too late to reverse damage caused by disease.  With many eye diseases, early detection is key.  We encourage you to schedule routine annual eye examinations to preserve your vision and eye health.
